When the members of a team work well together and the necessary competencies are present, that team can achieve amazing results!
This is why everybody wishes to build a good team. Productivity increases as the trust amongst members increases and the individual engagement grows above the average. Building a team, however, takes effort, open communication, trust and emotional energy. (You will be able to read more about a group development model in a future newsletter).
Teambuilding events are part of the team building process. Although they are not necessary as such, they are an excellent way to boost acceptance amongst the members of a team and to get to know more about the hidden skills of all participants. It can be a high impact learning experience.
Teambuilding events – out of the office – really help to bring down the fences between people and through fun and maybe competition they can enhance the acceptance between all members.
In order to organise a good teambuilding event, there should be several ingredients present in the process, in order to increase the team’s success.
- - a goal, the team needs clear expectations,
- - some boundaries or limitations, (the cost control part of the team),
- - cooperation and collaboration between the team members. The teambuilding event should be used as time to interact, smoothen and enhance communication between the members.
When people are out of the office environment they tend to focus on the event itself and will surely behave differently than they would in the office. Very often barriers between subordinates and managers are less present which gives everyone the opportunity to be him- or herself and display competencies nobody knew they had. This increases appreciation of colleagues.
You may have guessed that we support the organisation of team building events. We do believe you should consider the ingredients we talked about and thus think about the setting up of the goal, the communication and the buy-in of the participants. It may be an investment, but very often with a very good ROI such as engagement, acceptance and trust.

Moving into the recruitment sector, I have accumulated more than 25 years experience as a Consultant, Manager and Managing Director in a number of small and large, national and international, specialised recruitment firms.
After graduating from Solvay Business School, I trained at INSEAD. I am also a certified Business & Executive Coach and certified Mediator.
